When you think about the big professional hair brands, each one has its own lane, and its own reputation. For many years Redken was the main go to, but recently it has had a major competitor. Matrix has always been that awkward cousin in the salon, sitting somewhere between pro and budget, never really owning either. When you think of heavy hitters like Redken under L'Oréal, Matrix usually wasn’t the first brand that came to mind. It worked, it was reliable, but it didn’t feel exciting.

But lately… that’s been changing.

Matrix is finally starting to feel like it knows exactly who it’s talking to. It’s leaning into being more accessible, more playful, and honestly, more in tune with what younger clients actually want. Lower price point? Yes. But still giving salon quality results? Also yes. And that combo matters way more right now than prestige alone.

The biggest shift though is the branding. Matrix used to feel forgettable on the shelf, but now it’s bright, colorful, and way more eye catching. And in an era where packaging and aesthetic matters just as much as performance, that’s a big deal.

Here is an example of the the new versus the older packaging.

When on the topic of Matrix, we must talk the holiday drop. The Little Miss themed gift sets were honestly one of the smartest moves they’ve made. It hit that perfect mix of nostalgia and trendiness, and it felt very “now” without trying too hard.

That being said, it’s not fully there yet. There’s still a perception gap. A lot of stylists and clients still associate Matrix with being the “cheaper” line, and those reputations don’t change overnight. But right now? Matrix feels like it’s having a moment... and for the first time in a while, people are actually paying attention.

And honestly, it’s about time.
