GQ is making the argument that toupees are making their way back, but not in the way you might think. Modern day toupees or more commonly called “hair systems” in recent years, they are becoming popular again among younger men, especially millennials and Generation Z. They make the point that in the past, toupees were often seen as embarrassing or fake, but modern versions are much more natural looking. To add to that, not only are they socially accepted but they are even celebrated. Like most things in recent years, social media has been the forefront for this. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have played a big role in this comeback. Influencers and stylists share transformation videos showing how realistic hair systems can look, which has helped reduce the stigma around wearing them by a lot.
“Why play with the same character skin when you can keep unlocking new ones? The way the world is right now, ain't nobody real. Everyone's fake. Everyone's had something done. There's so many different things that you can do and it's fine. If that makes you happy, then that makes you happy.”
Working in the hair industry in recent years, we are seeing the stigma around toupees is starting to change. This is because modern day toupees or hair systems are not what they used to be. They are made with better materials and adhesives, causing them to blend seamlessly with natural hair and look like a normal haircut. Social media has been such a powerhouse in recent years when it comes to guiding trends. In this instance, it is no difference, you see people like the toupee queen on social media, and she posts these extraordinary transformations. The thing I noticed about these videos is not just the hair, but the light and confidence that comes back into these men's eyes after they see their new hair. Seeing a guest look in the mirror after their service and watching their confidence light up again is what makes everything in the hair industry worth it.
